Up and down the canal and all along the greenbelt, the young hawks rove, trying their best to catch a meal. It's impossible to tell whether Rufous or Roxie are still providing food, but the little ones clearly understand they need to be looking out for themselves.

The little hawks no longer hang out together in the cypress tree begging for food.
They have spread out in the neighborhood, but they still keep an eye on each other, in case somebody catches something. Then they will pursue the lucky one, screaming for a share of the meal.

Today we returned from church to find a dead bird on the patio, its small body still limp. We are suspicious that an aerial conflict caused one of the hawks to drop his prey. Why did none of the hawks retrieve the dead bird? I really don't know, but perhaps, since it was not moving, they could not find it. I was dismayed to find that the dead bird was a female cardinal.

What a successful season for Rufous and Roxie! We believe all four of the fledglings are still alive and doing well. By this time, they are fully developed as juveniles, and Hunting Lesson 101 has been completed. It is time to disperse further afield where there are more birds and less competition. Happy hunting little hawks! Aloha to Season 2015! We hope to see Rufous and Roxie again next year.
